This movie is a down-to-earth story about a man who returns to his hometown and awaits his results from the BAR exam. So he takes a summer job as a youth pastor at his church and it changes his life. I appreciated it greatly and recommend it highly.

You can tell that this is a low budget movie, but they do an excellent job!

Home at Last is a movie about the orphan train… something I don’t remember hearing about before this particular film.
It stars a young Adrien Brody, his character is an upstart who is bound and determined to escape from these life of quiet countryside family. Basically it’s a good one to watch if you like warm fuzzies. There is some sadness—oh and a special treat of course… a Morgan Harris (Frank Converse), except his name in this movie is Nils Anderson.

You should watch it!

violence and choice of viewing

I think I have friends that have seen and like Kingdom of Heaven and since I just mentioned not liking blood and gore, I thought I'd focus on that movie for a minute... in fact it may come off the sidebar list soon, but I wanted to "camp" there for a bit.

The religious content is what caused me to highlight it at all, the way in which the peasants, noblemen, and priesthood, "Christian" and "Muslim" participants reacted at the heart of it intrigued me. People fighting for a cause, people fighting for religion, fighting to save their homes...

What is Jerusalem worth?

Nothing. And everything!

The interaction between the different religious backgrounds of those who didn't really know more than 'this is the religion I have grown up with and this is my world...' but should it be and hasn't there been enough bloodshed?

When does it end... all those things strike my heart.

For you see, I don't think it will end, the killing--it's happening now, for the exact same reasons. We don't hear about it much, just now and then, but people die every day because of what they stand for--who they believe in--persecution for a belief held dear. I'm not blind enough, nor arrogant enough to assume that only a Christian can lose a life for standing firm.

My but I expect that breaks God's very heart.

For those of you who don't know I like clean movies; explicit sex, a lot of violence (especially over bloodied), and foul mouths are of little interest to me. I just finished reading a not too friendly review of this movie, that it seems FoxFaith thinks Christians must be brain-dead for making such a sappy no-account movie... but I've seen the film and while I admit it is not the most stunning movie I've ever watched, it is clean (no clean does not equal good quality) at least it's better than all the junk that's heaped and heaped on us all the time in the news and on prime time TV as well as the theater...

I liked it, there was a little underdevelopment when it came to the characters, it felt like there were blank spots... as if maybe the story was taken from a book and as a matter of fact it was... where there is more time to delve into those characters. If you want something with a bittersweet ending, go for it!

This is a sad movie, but a Jimmy Stewart flick, so could it be that bad? Don't watch it if you want a super-happy ending. I found the opening prayer at the dinner table interesting... I've met many-a person who felt just like that:

Charlie Anderson: Lord, we cleared this land. We plowed it, sowed it, and harvest it. We cook the harvest. It wouldn't be here and we wouldn't be eating it if we hadn't done it all ourselves. We worked dog-bone hard for every crumb and morsel, but we thank you Lord just the same for the food we're about to eat, amen.

My sweet little sister decided that she would purchase the “Beauty & the Beast” TV series for me because I liked it so much when I was younger. I admit that honestly I didn’t really even remember the series until she brought it back to my attention. But, with some confidence I can say I know WHY I liked it so much, it’s that whole being in a secret world, set apart from others—very exciting!

Anybody else remember this series? Thoughts? I finished the first season and the opinion is that they are a tad bit melodramatic, but interesting enough for me J if not a little predictable…

Interesting plotline... some hilarious parts... I try not to include too many movies with swearing, mostly because no matter what you may think, swearing to me is just like saying mean, hateful, negative things all the time... it brings you down. Not my idea of a good time... (mini sermon over)
I have just begun to really like The Rock and he does a good job in this movie. If you like adventure... go for it!

From his fake blue eyes to his over-worked attempt to imitate Christopher Reeve Brandon Routh was a poor choice. The person in charge of casting for this movie did a bad job. Not that The original Superman movies were stellar, but this addition sure didn’t live up to others.

I give it two solid thumbs down.

The irony about watching this movie was that in my other blog I made reference to Mimi Siku from Jungle 2 Jungle and that very day I go home and see him as Jimmy Olsen (Sam Huntington), he was probably the best cast member (imho)

Watch at your own snooze risk, just don’t operate heavy machinery while you do it!

The Thing

For those who have not had the pleasure of this movie experience, I say, shame on you, shame shame! It is probably one of the best scary movies in the world and I am not exaggerating. It's a classic and for it's time the effects are great, but greater still is the dialogue.

For those of you who are completely unaware of the plot--this movie is about an alien ship landing in the coldest region... one passenger aboard (that survived anyway). It's vegatable matter and it's out to kill all humans in it's path! (Run for your life charlie brown!)

They've laid a trap and are now waiting for the Thing to make an appearance... do you hear the suspense-filled music--good now read:

Lt. Ken McPherson: What if he can read our minds?
Eddie: He'll be real mad when he gets to me.

Scotty: You sure you know how to use that thing?

"Are you watching closely?" It's amazing, boggles the mind a bit. If you like magic tricks, if you like a good twisty-turny story... if you are a Bale, Jackman fan, you should watch this movie. I think while it is not my "favorite" movie of all time, it ranks high on the suspense list. The movie does not paint either man in a particularly attractive light--what happens when people are consumed with an idea or a desire? It's called passion sometimes... others obsession. What makes it one and not the other?

I recommend this movie and if I did a star ranking I think it would get a 5 of 5... but I don't do that... so take what you will from this post and if you are interested... by all means discuss it with me!

NCIS

The banter is interesting, at least in those seasons, I haven't watched much else. I'm sorry for the season finale of the second one, but hey it was different.

Boo for sharpe

For those interested parties, I liked the basic storyline for Sharpe, but I didn't get into it. Mostly because of the lack of morals within the group of soldiers. I know that it's probably a truer portrayal of human nature, but I don't like to watch it.

The one thing that disturbed me most about the last one that I watched was that Sharpe cheated on his wife (lover, whatever she was) and then at the end of the episode the wife(lover?) dies and he's all in mourning, I thought, how cheap and lame!

Sharpe's Honour

Recently started viewing a set of DVDs (i.e. haven’t even finished watching the first disc yet). I was drawn to it partially because Sean Bean is the main character, Major Sharpe. Apparently this set was filmed in 1994, almost 7 years before LOTR movies, he’s filled out a little since ’94. Anyhow so far so good, kinda sad and not really the best “hero” in the world so far, but maybe things will change. The impression I’m getting right now is that I’ve jumped smack in the middle of an existing storyline… so perhaps there were previous episodes… investigation into this will follow. Until then, TTFN.

Almost forgot, originally written by Bernard Cornwell as a series of books, it currently looks as if Sharpe's Honour is the third in a series.

Prince Chulalongkorn: It is always surprising how small a part of life is taken up by meaningful moments. Most often they're over before they start even though they cast a light on the future and make the person who originated them unforgettable.

If you haven't see this movie, I recommend it. It's definitely different from the musical with Yule Brenner and Julie Andrews. I haven't seen the Rex Harrison version.

Movies watched in the last two weeks

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen -- This is probably the weirdest movie I've seen lately. The person(s) who wrote the graphic novel probably went through most of their childhood(s) writing fan fiction. Grabbed all their favorite characters in literature and threw them together in a story... not recommended.

Aladdin -- and while watching enjoyed the antics of five other individuals in the room--who by the way have watched that movie one time too many!

The Little Mermaid -- I like some of the songs, but really the story doesn't interest me... tho the above mentioned people made it all the more entertaining.

Cars -- Cute, graphics were neater than in OtH.

Over the Hedge -- cute.

Napoleon Dynomite -- I will admit it lacks the obscenity that most movies have, but really it lacked any value for me.

Lucy Maude Montgomery wrote an engaging set of books following young Anne Shirley through the trials of life... starting out as an orphan passed around to families who only saw her as the help and discouraged her every wish to learn and read, life seemed harsh. But when you take a blossoming child and give her some fertile soil, oh the things that can happen. From gliding down the lake as the lady of shalot to saving a child's life... never a dull moment.

Wednesday night I had a messaging exchange with a friend whereup he asked me what I was up to and I responded by telling him I was all wet. (it's been raining a bit here in my state... who would a thought a hurricane could bring rain--). So he called and asked me "are you singing in the rain?" Starring Ginger Rogers as Susan Applegate, a young woman forced to disguise herself as a 12-year-old girl to get a half-price ticket while traveling from New York to her home town. En route, she meets Major Kirby (Ray Milland), an instructor at a military school who is unable to figure out the mysterious quality which draws him to the seemingly innocent young girl. Flooding on the tracks on the outskirts of town brings Kirby's fiancee Pamela (Rita Johnson) to the train, where she finds that he allowed Susan to spend the night in the lower berth of his compartment. To prove his story he brings her back to the school, until she can be taken home, housing her with Pamela. Although her younger sister Lucy (Diana Lynn) sees through the ruse, her hatred for her sister creates a bond with Susan.

The light romantic comedy, Billy Wilder's first American film as a director, features his favorite motif of disguise and deception. Despite the genre, the scenes between Rogers and wised-up child prodigy Diana Lynn are the best in the film.

Two conductors were walking up and down the aisles asking for "tickets please" when they happen upon a very mature looking 12 year old girl... Trying to trip her up they begin a conversation with her, wherein she states that because of her glands she's much bigger for her age. Afterall, her mama told her that she's from "swedish stock".
First Conductor: If you're Swedish, suppose you say something in Swedish.
Susan Applegate: I vant to be alone.

Ginger Rogers is one of my favorite actresses, talented and beautiful she also always seemed to have a kind face.

Lady in the Water

This is a great movie! If you haven't seen it make sure you do! I searched through to find just the right picture without giving anything away and I couldn't. The story is unlike any other I've seen.

I can't wait to read the book (and actually I want to see the movie again--almost enough to go watch it in the theater a second time).

The filmography was pretty cool too! Shyamalan is probably my favorite writer, director, producer. (The Alfred Hitchcock of our time, aye?)

Ever After

Cinderella is my all time favorite dream movie, probably because of the song and again being directly tied to good memories of my childhood. For that reason I never wanted to see Ever After, I thought that they would ruin it! But then I watched it...

My absolute favorite scene in this movie is when Danielle decks Marguerite. There's another gem in there, but to save you if you haven't watched it, I won't say any more!

Henry: Do you really think there is only one perfect mate?
Leonardo da Vinci: As a matter of fact, I do.
Henry: Well then how can you be certain to find them? And if you do finally find them, are they really the one for you or do you only think they are? And what happens if the person you're supposed to be with never appears, or she does, but you're too distracted to notice?
Leonardo da Vinci: You learn to pay attention.
Henry: Then let's say God puts two people on Earth and they are lucky enough to find one another. But one of them gets hit by lightning. Well then what? Is that it? Or, perchance, you meet someone new and marry all over again. Is that the lady you're supposed to be with or was it the first? And if so, when the two of them were walking side by side were they both the one for you and you just happened to meet the first one first or was the second one supposed to be first? And is everything just chance or are some things meant to be?

It's a Wonderful Life

I'm posting one of my favorite movies every--cliche' tho it may be "It's a Wonderful Life" speaks volumes to me--beyond the fact that I think a whole lot of good ole Jimmy, there are lines in this movie and interactions of characters that seem so real to me (maybe I'm just a sap, doesn't matter I still like it).

George Bailey: [gazing eyes with Mary] Well, well, well.
Freddie Othello: Now, to get back to my story, see? [in a trance, Mary hands Othello her drink, and George and Mary start dancing]
Freddie Othello: Hey, this is MY dance!
George Bailey: Oh, why don't you stop annoying people.
Freddie Othello: Well, I'm sorr- Hey!

Mickey: [Mickey walks up to a disheartened Freddie Othello, dumped by Mary Hatch] What's the matter, Othello - jealous? Did you know there's a swimming pool under this floor? And did you know that *button* behind you causes this floor to open up? And did you further know that George Bailey is dancing right over that crack?
[Othello turns to Mickey]
Mickey: I've got the key!

Uncle Billy: After all, Potter, some people like George HAD to stay at home. Not every heel was in Germany and Japan.

George Bailey: What is it you want, Mary? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That's a pretty good idea. I'll give you the moon, Mary.
Mary: I'll take it. Then what?
George Bailey: Well, then you can swallow it, and it'll all dissolve, see... and the moonbeams would shoot out of your fingers and your toes and the ends of your hair... am I talking too much?

There's something about these lines that are very cheesy and yet sweet. Unlike the lines I've heard lately which have just simply been lame--could it be that the person saying it makes all the difference?

Man on Porch: Why don't you kiss her instead of talking her to death?
George Bailey: You want me to kiss her, huh?
Man on Porch: Ah, youth is wasted on the wrong people.
(this is of course where Mary loses the robe she was wearing and ends up hiding in a bush)

Clarence: Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?

For any person who has ever thought "I wish I had never been born" this statement is so profound--that question of "what would be if I were not here, if I'd never been here who would have been affected.

The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is probably an all-time favorite movie from my childhood.

Why? I’m not entirely sure, for the longest time it was tradition for me to watch it once a year. I was a little girl the first time I saw it and according to my grandparents I was absolutely glued to the screen. While I have no memory of this I do believe it.

Maybe it was because of the little girl leaving home with her dog and ending up in this amazing fantastical world with bright colors, just over the rainbow. Maybe it was the cute little people she encountered there or the journey she took along the yellow brick road. Or perhaps it was the simplistic message “There’s no place like home”.

I count it a milestone in my life, silly though it may be. It brings back memories of being in my grandparents house, of lying on the family room floor with Pawpaw flipping channels and Grandma looking through catalogues, or working crossword puzzles. And memories of big comfy blankets and laughter—love and the grateful heart that I have for such wonderful family.

This is another blog for movies I like and reasons I do... comment if you like, suggest what you will. Pretty much I just hope that you enjoy it because it's just plain fun!

So to start off with saying that I love old movies and will be listing my favorite actors and actresses at a later date (today's post features one clearly ;-) Gary Cooper, handsome no?

The purpose of this blog is mainly not to overload the other with movies!
